September 29, 2026. This issue first said Oklahoma has 22,000 abandoned wells. The Oklahoma Corporation Commission, the state agency that regulates oil and gas, counted 20,406 known abandoned wells that still need to be plugged or taken over, in 76 of the state’s 77 counties, in a January 2025 report to a state Senate subcommittee, and it says the real number is almost certainly noticeably higher. The issue now says more than 20,000. The PDF above is left as it was sent.
