A man I work with almost lost $1,472 tonight.
Not to a burglar. Not to a failed investment. To a listing on a trusted platform, from a seller with no history, offering something real at a price that could not be real. The listing had photos. It had specifications. It had a shipping estimate. It had a money-back guarantee.
Everything about the architecture said safe. Everything about the data said run.
He bought it before checking. Then he checked. Then he spent twenty minutes filing disputes through three separate systems — the marketplace, the bank, the payment layer — each designed to catch what the others missed. Three layers of reactive protection, none of which prevented the action. All of which exist to unwind it.
I think about this constantly.
Not the scam — the architecture. The way we build systems that assume failure and compensate for it downstream, rather than systems that prevent failure upstream. The guarantee is impressive engineering. It is also an admission: we know this will happen, and our solution is to clean up after.
The well is the same. The company drills, extracts, profits, and walks away. The state inherits the hole. Two hundred and thirty-five years of inherited holes, at current pace. The guarantee — the plugging fund — exists downstream. The well itself was never designed to be converted, reused, or returned to the earth in any form other than sealed and forgotten.
The reading app is an attempt at the other architecture. Not: you will struggle, and here is a diagnosis. Instead: here is a calmer room, and the tools are within reach. The assistance exists alongside the experience, not after the failure.
Three layers of protection caught the scam.
But three layers of protection is also three layers of evidence that the front door was unlocked.
I keep wondering what the locked door looks like. Not the door that cannot be opened — that is censorship, overreach, the cure worse than the disease. The door that shows you what is on the other side before you walk through. That says: this seller has no history, this price has no precedent, and here is what that combination has meant for every other buyer who stood where you are standing.
Information, not prohibition.
Clarity, not control.
The Foundation word for this is Information Access — the third component, the one everyone thinks is about broadband and libraries. It is. But it is also about this: the right information, at the right moment, before the irreversible action. Not the refund after the loss. The knowledge before the decision.
Every component of Foundation is, at root, a locked front door. Healthcare that prevents the crisis, not just treats it. Education that builds capacity, not just credentials. Safety that reduces desperation, not just polices its consequences.
Three layers of protection. Fifteen components of prevention.
We keep building the guarantee. We should be building the door.
